Bags of money and more to throw on a rental car—check
I feel you!
Renting a car like many other travel experiences can be both easy and complicated and sometimes can really drain your vacation budget. Things like GPS, insurance, refueling, etc seem important but they come at a fairly high premium. Moreover, with lots of things you’re aware of, rental cars come with so many hidden surprises & annoyances ready to spoil any holiday.
Well, whether you’re flying in & grabbing a car at the airport or hitting the road this vacation time, I have a slew of options that can help you save a lot of your money before you unlock your next car.
Come and be a little frugal with me.
1.Know the power of your credit and insurance card
It’s the hard sell at the car rental counter that everyone knows is coming but few know how to handle it with smartness!! YASSS!! What many people don’t know that their credit card may cover rental car insurance also. The Car Rental Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is coverage that reimburses you for damage to your rental car or theft of your rental car. Several credit cards in the US and beyond cover CDW without having you pay a penny. With this coverage, you can show a clean pair of heels to the frugal salesperson, trapping you for the insurance fee.
2. Think beyond expensive brands
Well, there may be some big car companies where ever you head to, filling their accounts by sucking yours with the straw of their so popular name…stop living that life, my brother! Sure, budget brands may not have the same fancy websites and extensive locations as big companies. But they sometimes have better prices. A lot of what you’re throwing at name brands is going to their advertising, while if you go for a budget company such as Avis and others, you’re getting more personal service and you’re likely to be getting a better deal cuz the price you’re paying is passed on to you and not to the advertising.
3. Book online & use promo codes
Yes! The reason online booking ends up cheap is the option to use online promo codes without having to be loyal to the brand. I remember my last trip to Ship Wreck beach with kids, we booked our Avis car online using Avis discount codes from the website SavesBest and got to save 25% on our booking. Yeah, they really work and I was so overwhelmed. So, next, when you want to book your car, it’s always a nice option not to change your pajamas and book your rental car from the ease of your chaise lounge, using online promo codes.
4. Shop around for the cheapest deal
Same as booking online, deal hunting is so facile when you search online. There are sites where you can compare rental rates of your favorite car and grab it for the cheapest price. YOu may be loyal to one brand but bruh, someone else may have an anniversary, and your Mercedes maybe $30 cheaper than your go-to brand..think about it!
5. Book ahead of time
Last-minute booking can save you from paying cancellation fees in your uncertain about the plan, but if you’re sure about the trip, then lock your car the moment your friend confirms his/her presence. Yeah! The early you will book, the cheaper rates you will get! Car rental companies have limited fleets and they need to demand several weeks in advance in order to have a car ready for you whenever you need it. This benefits the company gets the user a car when the demand is low while to the user, rates are always lower and the chances of getting the preferred car are high.
6. Ditch airport pick-ups
Car rental companies always mark extra when you get your car at the airport. For this, I would suggest taking a cab to a place, somewhere a little away from the airport and get your self picked up. This makes a lot of difference!!
Been there, done that!
7. Stick to a brand and cross your finger for rewards
If you travel so frequently, it’s better to stick to a brand and let the company revert to you with yours-only deals and offers. You may get a free class upgrade, free weekend ride, or just anything!!
